Blue Margarita (Margarita Azul)

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This blue margarita recipe is a colorful twist on a classic cocktail.  Everyone loves a margarita, so you know this drink is going to be a huge hit!  The addition of Blue Curacau (orange liqueur), gives an extra kick of citrus flavor and a gorgeous color, and who wouldn't want that?

The blue curaçao replaces the triple sec (Cointreau) normally in a traditional margarita recipe. It is sweeter than triple sec and has a slightly bitter citrus taste, thanks to the bitter oranges from which it is made. This infusion of bittersweet citrus flavor pairs perfectly with tequila and lime in this tasty and refreshing cocktail. And the best part is that it is incredibly easy to make!

This blue cocktail recipe only requires four simple ingredients and a couple of minutes to make it.  It's the perfect easy drink for your next happy hour!

Ingredient Notes

A classic margarita is just tequila, Cointreau (or Triple Sec), and lime juice. We have stuck to this tried and true definition and just swapped out the Triple Sec for Blue Curacao.

  • Tequila. You can use any type you prefer best!  For the most vibrant bright blue color use a blanco tequila.
  • Lime Juice. We always highly recommend using fresh lime juice for making cocktails as it gives the best flavor.
  • Blue Curacao. I recommend going for a mid to high-end Blue Curacao, like Giffard or Drillaud, for a more authentic orange peel flavor.
  • Ice cubes. This makes the drink chilled and deliciously refreshing.

Garnish Suggestions

A garnish is entirely optional as this drink is beautiful and delicious as is. But if you would like to garnish your cocktail you can find some inspiration below:

  • Lime wedge or lime slice
  • Coarse salt on the rim of the glass
  • Blue sugar to rim the glass
  • Edible flowers
  • Cocktail cherries
  • Orange slice
  • Citrus zest twist
  • Cocktail umbrella

How to Make a Blue Margarita

This cocktail only takes a few minutes to create and you'll only need a cocktail shaker and a jigger to make it. You can follow the step-by-step instructions below, or you can find a detailed recipe card at the end of this post.

  • STEP ONE: Fill a cocktail shaker (or large glass jar with a lid) with ice cubes.
  • STEP TWO: Add the tequila, blue curacao and lime juice. Shake well for 30 - 60 seconds.
  • STEP THREE: Pour into your prepared glass and enjoy immediately. You can add an optional garnish too if desired!

Expert Tips

  • This is a fairly tart cocktail. If you prefer a sweeter drink, you can add a dash of simple syrup to sweeten it up
  • If you'd prefer a frozen blue margarita, you can easily turn this recipe into one. Simply add all of the ingredients into a blender with about 1 cup of ice (5 to 6 cubes) and blend until smooth. Serve and enjoy immediately.
  • I've served this delicious cocktail in a rocks glass, but you can use a margarita glass if you prefer.
