The blue motorcycle drink is a bold, colorful cocktail that’s as fun to look at as it is to sip. Similar to a Long Island Iced Tea, this vibrant blue twist mixes vodka, rum, tequila, gin, and Blue Curaçao for a sweet drink filled with citrusy flavor and a punch of alcohol. It’s bubbly, fruity, and dangerously easy to enjoy - so sip slowly!
Sometimes called an Adios Motherfucker or Blue Long Island, this cocktail first appeared in the 1970s and quickly gained a reputation for being both strong and delicious. With lemon-lime soda instead of cola, the blue motorcycle drink has a lighter, summery vibe and a bright tropical flavor that makes it perfect for parties or happy hours on hot summer days.

If you're a fan of blue drinks, you should also try the blue lagoon cocktail or this aqua velva drink. Both are citrusy and delicious!
Ingredient Notes
A Blue Motorcycle Drink contains 5 different types of alcohol along with lemon-lime soda and sour mix. This strong, citrus cocktail requires a stocked bar cart to make - but it's worth it!
- White rum - You can use any kind you like best! Clear or white rum is best for this drink as it is the most mild in flavor and it won't muddy the bright blue color.
- Silver tequila - I recommend using silver tequila for this cocktail, not only for the flavor but like the rum it will not change the blue color of the cocktail.
- Vodka - Any plain, unflavored vodka will work fine here.
- Gin - There are so many different types of gin available with different tasting notes. Use your preferred brand.
- Blue Curaçao - This is an orange-flavored liqueur that is dyed blue. This is a must-have ingredient to get the iconic blue hue of this drink.
- Lemon-lime soda - I typically use Sprite or 7Up in this cocktail. You can definitely swap the soda for a diet lemon lime soda if you want less sugar. Sparkling lemonade would also work well here.
- Sour mix - I always use my homemade sour mix but a store bought mix will work fine too.
See the recipe card below for ingredient list with measurements.
Optional Garnish Suggestions
- Slice of lemon
- Maraschino cherry
- A fresh sprig of mint
- A cocktail umbrella (perfect for poolside sipping)
How to Make a Blue Motorcycle Cocktail
This easy cocktail recipe only requires a jigger and a cocktail shaker. Although there are lots of ingredients, the recipe is simple enough for a beginner.

- STEP ONE: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
- STEP TWO: Add the rum, tequila, vodka, gin, Blue Curaçao, and sour mix.
- STEP THREE: Place the lid on the shaker and shake well for 30 seconds.
- STEP FOUR: Fill a tall glass with ice cubes or crushed ice and pour in the shaken drink.
- STEP FIVE: Top with the lemon-lime soda, add any desired garnishes and enjoy immediately.

Large Batch Pitcher Variation
Because this cocktail recipe uses equal parts of tequila, rum, gin and vodka, it is simple to scale up the amount of each ingredient proportionally according to how many servings you require (you can do this right in the recipe card).
Mix together the alcohol and sour mix in a pitcher and then top with lemon-lime soda and gently stir. You can add lemon slices to the pitcher, or alternatively, you can garnish each individual drink as desired.
