Jack and Coke

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Jack and Coke is a classic cocktail that never goes out of style. It’s simple, smooth, and super easy to make - just Tennessee whiskey and cola, poured over ice. The combo is sweet, bold, and always hits the spot.

This drink falls under the highball category, which means there’s a higher ratio of mixer (in this case, Coke) to whiskey. The trick is finding the balance that works best for you - some like a stronger drink, others prefer it a little sweeter. Either way, it’s a super approachable cocktail that’s hard to mess up.

The drink gets its name from Jack Daniel’s, the iconic Tennessee whiskey introduced back in 1866 by Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel. Since then, Jack Daniel’s has become a staple in bars around the world, with plenty of flavor variations to play around with. So if you’re in the mood for a laid-back, reliable cocktail, Jack and Coke is always a solid choice.

Ingredient Notes

The name says it all with this tasty cocktail - just two simple ingredients are needed here.  This easy highball drink is mixed right in the glass, so no bar equipment is needed.

  • Jack Daniels Whiskey - Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 Tennessee Whiskey is the traditional variety of whiskey used for this mixed drink. The maple charcoal-mellowed whiskey is the perfect companion to the sweet fizzy cola.
  • Coke - Classic Coca-Cola always works best for this cocktail recipe. But you can also use any other preferred cola or whatever you have on hand.
  • Lemon Juice - This is an optional ingredient but are highly recommended. The acidity from the lemon cuts through the sweetness of the cola and adds a delicious brightness. Simply squeeze the juice from a lemon into the drink before serving. You can also use lime for a similar effect.

See the recipe card at the bottom of the post for ingredients with measurements.

How to Make the Best Jack and Coke

Getting the right ratio is key to making this highball cocktail. A lot of times, restaurant versions go heavy on the Coke, which can drown out the whiskey and throw off the balance.

I’ve found that a 1:2 ratio - one part Jack to two parts Coke - hits just the right note. It’s the standard ratio, but feel free to tweak it a bit depending on how strong (or sweet) you like your pour.

  • STEP ONE: Fill a highball glass with large ice cubes.
  • STEP TWO: Add your preferred amount of Jack Daniels.
  • STEP THREE: Add in the desired amount of Coke. Taste and adjust mix to your personal preference.
  • STEP FOUR: Enjoy as is, or optionally, add a squeeze of lemon and garnish with a lemon wedge or wheel.

Expert Tip

Whenever you make a mixed drink with a carbonated mixer (or "topper") it is best to add the soda at the end right before serving. This will allow the drinker to enjoy the most effervescent cocktail.

Jack and Coke Variations

Different types of Jack Daniels:

  • Tennessee Apple - Adds a subtle green apple nuance to the drink which makes for a delicious fruity variation on the classic.
  • Tennessee Rye - Rye whiskeys are spicy in flavor. So try using this variety of Jack Daniels if you enjoy a drink with a kick and spicy finish.
  • Tennessee Honey - This whiskey is blended with honey liqueur and adds a delicious extra flavor profile and sweetness to the cocktail.
  • Tennessee Fire - This variation is for the spice-lovers! It adds a tasty cinnamon spice flavor that is a delicious twist on the classic Jack and Coke.
  • Gentleman Jack - A double mellowed whiskey that makes extra smooth whiskey cocktails.

Different types of Coke:

  • Flavored coke - Coca-cola comes in a wide variety of flavors that are all delicious when paired with whiskey - Cherry Coke is my personal favorite served with a maraschino cherry garnish. So buy your favorite one and give this classic drink an easy and tasty twist!
  • Diet versions. You can make this drink using diet cola as well. This includes Coca-cola Zero Sugar and Diet Coke.

Add ice cream:

  • Who doesn't love a coke float?! So why not make an adult version by adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream to your whiskey and coke? It turns it into a delicious alcoholic treat!

Notes

  • This mixed drink is best enjoyed as soon as it is made as it will lose some of its carbonation over time. So it is best to serve this drink soon after making it.
  • The classic Whiskey Coke ratio is 2 to 1. But if you like a boozier drink feel free to add additional vodka or reduce the amount of coca-cola in each serving.
