Lynchburg Lemonade

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Lynchburg Lemonade is a bright, citrusy cocktail made with whiskey, triple sec, and plenty of lemon-lime flavor. Named after Lynchburg, Tennessee—home of the Jack Daniel's Distillery—this refreshing drink has become a signature way to enjoy Tennessee whiskey, especially in the summer.

Despite the name, the Lynchburg Lemonade was actually created in 1980 by Tony Mason at a bar in Huntsville, Alabama. He later sued Jack Daniel’s for using the drink without credit, though the distillery ultimately won the case. Drama aside, it’s easy to see why this tangy, slightly sweet cocktail remains a crowd favorite.

Ingredient Notes

This spiked lemonade requires just a few simple ingredients to make a well-balanced and flavorful drink.

  • Whiskey - Traditionally this drink is made with Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 whiskey. But you can make it with any other kind too.
  • Triple Sec - This orange-flavored liqueur originated in France and adds a delicious fruity flavor to this drink. You could also use Grand Marnier or Cointreau instead, but we recommend using a good quality Triple Sec for the best results.
  • Lemon-lime soda - You can use any type of lemon lime soda - Sprite, 7UP or Sierra Mist all work fine. And if you prefer your drink less sweet, you can use homemade sparkling lemonade or a high-quality lemon soda instead.
  • Lemon juice - Freshly squeezed is always best as it adds the best flavor to cocktails. The original recipe for this cocktail contains sour mix. So feel free to substitute the lemon juice with sour mix if you prefer and want to stick to the traditional way of making it!

See the recipe card below for ingredient list with measurements.

Garnish Suggestions

This is a delicious drink all on its own, but it is always fun to add a garnish to make it feel extra special and celebratory. Here are some of my favorite options:

  • Lime wedge or wheel
  • Lemon wedge or wheel
  • Lemon or lime zest twist
  • Sprig of fresh mint
  • Edible fresh flowers

How to Make a Lynchburg Lemonade

This alcoholic lemonade only takes a few minutes to create and no fancy bar equipment is needed to make it.

Lemon lime soda being poured into a glass of Lynchburg lemonade.
  • STEP ONE: Pour the whiskey, triple sec, and lemon juice into a high-ball serving glass and add ice.
  • STEP TWO: Top with lemon-lime soda and gently mix together.
  • STEP THREE: Add an optional garnish, such as a lemon slice, and serve immediately.

Expert Tip

Whenever you make a mixed drink with a carbonated mixer (or "topper") it is best to add the soda at the end right before serving. This will allow the drinker to enjoy the most effervescent cocktail.

Pitcher Variation

It is easy to make and serve this cocktail in a pitcher when catering to a crowd. To do so, add the whiskey, triple sec, and lemon juice to a large pitcher according to how many servings you desire. Simply scale the amounts of each ingredient up proportionally to make the amount you need.

Fill the pitcher with lemon-lime soda and gently stir. Serve immediately over ice. You can add lemon slices to the pitcher, or alternatively, you can garnish each individual drink as desired.
