Shaft Drink

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

The Shaft drink is a fun little coffee cocktail that’s creamy, boozy, and totally delicious—a great pick-me-up whether you're starting the night or winding it down. This Canadian classic has been around since the early 2000s, and it's super easy to make at home.

At its core, a Shaft drink is made with vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream, and espresso (or cold brew if that’s what you have on hand). It’s a unique cocktail that is rich, smooth, and has just the right amount of kick. There are lots of variations out there—some folks add milk or cream, and others even splash in a little bourbon. Totally up to you!

Traditionally, it’s meant to be tossed back quickly—kind of like a boozy espresso shot on ice—but you can absolutely sip it slowly if that’s more your style. It’s the kind of drink that’s easy to customize and will quickly become a favorite for cocktail lovers.

Where does the drink's name come from?

The Shaft drink actually gets its name from the main character in the 1971 cult movie Shaft. In the movie, fictional Detective John Shaft is on a mission to rescue a gangster’s daughter, and the theme song—yep, that funky tune—went on to win an Academy Award!

While creation of the Shaft cocktail is attributed to Calgary, it has since become especially popular in Victoria, British Columbia. In fact, it’s such a thing there that they even host Shaft competitions. So, it’s got a bit of pop culture flair and a strong Canadian connection, too.

Ingredient Notes

A Shaft cocktail is made from four simple ingredients that come together to make a deliciously creamy coffee cocktail.

  • Coffee - This cocktail requires cold coffee and you can choose whether you want to add cold brew coffee or chilled espresso.  If you're looking for a low caffeine alternative you can use my decaf cold brew as a substitute.
  • Vodka - You can use any plain, unflavored vodka to make this drink. If you feel like adding a tasty twist, you could also use vanilla vodka or chocolate vodka. Or even coffee vodka for some extra coffee flavor!
  • Irish Cream liqueur - I like to use Bailey's Irish Cream, but you can use any type you prefer best.
  • Coffee liqueur - There are many different types of this liqueur available, so use your favorite!

See the recipe card below for ingredient list with measurements.

Variations

  • Make it Stronger - If you like a boozier drink try adding some bourbon whiskey. The flavors are complementary and it will make for a great addition!
  • Add a Touch of Sweetness - If you prefer a sweeter cocktail, you can add a dash of simple syrup, maple syrup, or honey.
  • Use Flavored Vodka - Try using vanilla vodka or chocolate vodka for a creamy mocha note.
  • Make it Creamy - Add your milk of your choice or heavy cream to make it more like a White Russian.

How to Make a Shaft Drink

This delicious coffee drink is an easy cocktail to make. You will only need a few minutes to mix it, along with a cocktail shaker and strainer.

Glassware for Serving this Cocktail

A short rocks glass, also known as an Old-Fashioned Glass, is the preferred glassware for serving a Shaft drink. It allows the cocktail to be fully emerged by ice, which makes for easy sipping.
