Tokyo Tea Cocktail

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

This Tokyo tea cocktail recipe is a refreshing drink made with sweet melon liqueur and fresh lime juice. A spin on the classic Long Island Iced Tea this easy Japanese Iced Tea cocktail is sure to make it onto your favorites list.

This hard-hitting cocktail gets it's name from the addition of melon liqueur, which is made in Japan. Six different liquors combine to create a delicious drink that somehow doesn't taste alcoholic, but definitely packs a punch! Unlike the Long Island iced tea, Tokyo tea is topped with club soda in place of cola - although some people prefer using lemon-lime soda for a sweeter flavor.

Ingredient Notes

  • Midori (Japanese Melon Liqueur) - The bright green color of this melon liqueur is what gives this cocktail it's unique color.
  • Vodka
  • White Rum - Make sure to use a white rum, so you don't affect the color of the drink.
  • Tequila - Similarly, a silver tequila will help preserve the green color.
  • Gin
  • Triple Sec
  • Lime Juice - Fresh squeezed lime juice has the best flavor. If you're all out of limes, use lemon juice instead.
  • Simple Syrup - I use homemade simple syrup, but store bought will work fine. If you don't have simple syrup you can replace the lime juice and simple syrup with 1 ounce of sweet and sour mix.
  • Soda Water - Club soda is used to top of this drink. If you prefer a sweeter taste, you can use a lemon lime soda like 7UP or sprite.

What is Midori?

Midori is a Japanese melon flavored liqueur. Midori is typically used in cocktails rather than consumed straight. The liqueur has a bright green color and is made from muskmelons and yubari fruit, which give it a sweet and slightly fruity flavor.

How To Make Simple Syrup For Cocktails

Simple syrup is a staple to make delicious sweet cocktails. Simple syrup is often used in mojitos, Long Island Iced Teas and many others.

To make a simple syrup you only need two ingredients. Sugar and water.

To make a simple syrup add equal parts sugar and water into a saucepan and bring it to a boil.

Reduce the heat and allow the syrup mixture to simmer for only a few minutes, only until the sugar has dissolved. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature and you're done! Simple right?

How To Make Tokyo Tea

Although this cocktail may appear to have many ingredients, with its 6 spirits. It is still an incredibly easy cocktail recipe.

To make this Tokyo Tea cocktail recipe simply pour the Midori, vodka, gin, tequila, rum, lime juice and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker or straight into your glass. Shake it up! Pour the cocktail over ice and top with soda water. That's it!

Expert Tips For Making The Best Tokyo Iced Tea

  • Use good quality spirits: Using high-quality spirits is essential for making a great Tokyo Iced Tea. Choose premium vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and triple sec.
  • Use freshly squeezed lime juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice gives the drink a brighter, fresher taste compared to bottled juice.
  • Balance the ingredients: The key to a great Tokyo Iced Tea is finding the right balance of sweetness, sourness, and alcohol. Adjust the amounts of Midori, lime juice, and club soda to your liking.
  • Chill the ingredients: Shake your ingredients with a few ice cubes to quickly chill it down. This will ensure a colder, more refreshing drink.
  • Use clear ice: Clear ice looks better in the drink and melts more slowly, which helps to keep it chilled for longer.
  • Experiment with different colas: Try using different colas, such as lemon-lime or ginger ale, to add an extra twist to your Japanese Iced Tea.

Glassware for Serving this Cocktail

Although I've shown this cocktail in a shorter glass, a Japanese iced tea is typically served in a highball glass.
