What is Midori?
Midori is a melon flavored Japanese liqueur. Midori is typically used in cocktails rather than consumed straight. The liqueur has a bright green color and is made from Japanese muskmelons and yubari fruit, which give it a sweet and slightly fruity flavor.

Ingredient Notes
This delicious drink only requires four simple ingredients.
- Midori Liqueur - Midori is a sweet melon-flavored liqueur that adds the unique flavor and bright green color to the midori sour.
- Sweet and Sour Mix - I use my homemade sour mix in this recipe. This common bar ingredient adds both sweet and tart flavors to compliment the melon liqueur. If you don't have sour mix on hand, you can use equal parts simple syrup and lemon juice.
- Lime Juice - Fresh citrus juice is used to balance out the sweetness of the Midori with a little sour flavor.
- Soda Water - Club soda is used to top of this drink. If you prefer a sweeter taste, you can use a lemon lime soda like 7UP or Sprite.
Variations
- Egg White Foam - Egg white gives a sour cocktail its distinctive frothy and creamy texture. If using egg white, add the egg white before shaking the cocktail. Substitute with aquafaba for a vegan version.
- For a stronger drink - Add 1 ounce of Vodka to the mix.
- Spicy Midori Sour - For a delicious spicy twist add a small amount of jalapeno or another hot pepper to the cocktail shaker. Make sure to strain the cocktail carefully to remove any bits of pepper.
- Midori Margarita Sour - Add a splash of orange liqueur like Cointreau or Triple sec to create a Midori Margarita Sour. Salt the rim of the glass for a classic margarita touch.
- Midori Sour with Ginger Ale - This is one of my favorite variations. Use ginger ale instead of soda to create a spicy, refreshing twist on the classic Midori cocktail.
- Midori Sour with Blue Curacao - For a blue twist on this classic green cocktail, add a splash of Blue Curacao to the recipe. Blue Curacao is an orange-flavored liqueur that adds a slightly bitter note to the sweet Midori Sour.
- Midori Sour with Champagne - Nothing tastes as good as Champagne or Prosecco in a cocktail. Add a splash of champagne to the Midori Sour in place of the soda. This variation is perfect for celebrations or special occasions.
How To Make A Midori Sour
- Step One - Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
- Step Two - Add the Midori, sour mix and lime juice to the cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for 15 seconds.
- Step Three - Strain the cocktail into an ice filled glass. Top with club soda or lemon-lime soda and garnish.
Garnish Suggestions
- Lemon wheel
- A wedge of honeydew melon
- A lemon peel
- A Maraschino cherry, which is placed on top of the foam (if using egg white).
