Easy Oat Milk Latte

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

I love making drinks with oat milk because it is so creamy, while still being dairy free.  Plus, it is so easy to make a creamy oat milk latte at home!  With only two simple ingredients, you'll be wondering why you were every buying these coffee drinks at the coffee shop.

An oat milk latte is typically made with espresso and oat milk. It is a hot beverage that is perfect for a vegan diet or dairy intolerance.  Oat milk is great for coffee because it is thicker and slightly sweeter than other milk alternatives, plus it gets creamy when heated.

What is oat milk?

Oat milk is a combination of just two ingredients - oats and water. They are blended together, then strained to get a smooth and creamy liquid that is milk-like in its consistency.  The creaminess of the oat milk makes it the perfect type of milk for milk foam.

This makes oat milk a natural dairy-free milk option that is lactose-free, low in saturated fat, free of cholesterol and high in soluble fiber.

There are two types of oat milk available. Store-bought oat milk is a great non-dairy milk for cereal, drinking and cooking.  But barista oat milk is what you'll find at the local coffee shop. The barista type of oat milk is creamier and will make a better oat milk foam.  I always use unsweetened oat milk - my favorite brand is Oatly.

How to make an Oat Milk Latte

It's so easy to make homemade oat milk lattes, even without a milk frother.

  • STEP 1 - Brew an espresso. You can choose to make a single shot or a double shot of espresso for your latte.  If you don't have an espresso machine, use ½ cup of strongly brewed coffee instead.
  • STEP 2 - Warm and froth your oat milk. If you don't have a milk frother see the alternative methods listed below.
  • STEP 3 - Pour the prepared espresso into a serving mug or glass.
  • STEP 4 - Top with the warm frothed milk and enjoy immediately.

How to froth your milk without a frother:

  • Stovetop: You can froth your oat milk by placing it in a small saucepan over medium heat. Then use a whisk to froth the milk as it warms up - this should take 2 - 5 minutes.
  • Blender: To froth your milk using a blender, warm the milk up using a microwave or stovetop. Place the warm milk in a high-speed blender and blend until frothy - this should take about 1 minute. (Be sure to first check that your blender can handle hot liquids if using this method).
  • Mason Jar: Warm your milk and add it to a mason jar with a lid.  Shake the jar vigorously until the oat milk doubles in size.

Oat Milk Latte Variations

  • Sweeten It: Add a little of your sweetener of choice to your latte. Cane sugar, honey, and maple syrup are all good options. You could also use simple syrup.  I especially love the flavor of sweetening my latte with brown sugar.  The amount of sweetener you add will depend on personal preferences. TIP: I find mixing the sweetener into the hot espresso works best.
  • Decaf option: You can still enjoy a delicious latte without any caffeine by using decaf coffee when making your latte.
  • Vanilla: Add a little bit of vanilla extract or vanilla syrup to your latte to turn it into a delicious vanilla oat latte.
  • Spices: For a hint of spice, sprinkle your latte with cinnamon or nutmeg for a yummy twist on a classic latte.  Or for seasonal fun, add a little of my homemade pumpkin spice syrup.
  • Mocha latte option: To turn this latte into a rich chocolatey mocha latte, mix in a teaspoon of cocoa powder into the hot espresso.
