Ingredient Notes

This easy smoothie recipe uses just a few simple ingredients.

  • Blueberries - You can use fresh or frozen blueberries. Use the best-quality berries you can as they provide this smoothie with so much flavor.
  • Pineapple - It is best to use frozen pineapple for this recipe as it gives the smoothie a delicious texture and keeps it chilled. You can cut a fresh pineapple into small chunks and pop them in an airtight container or bag in the freezer overnight. If you don't have frozen pineapple, fresh will also work.
  • Frozen banana - I prefer using frozen banana instead of fresh banana.  This makes the smoothie thick, creamy, and sweet. To make this blueberry smoothie without banana simply substitute the banana for coconut cream, chia seeds, yogurt, or even avocado (my personal favorite).
  • Nut butter - Use your favorite nut butter of your choice. I'm an cashew butter addict so that's definitely my go-to but any kind will work for this recipe.
  • Ground flax seeds - This is a personal favorite ingredient. They add extra protein, fiber and omega-3 fatty acids. You can substitute with chia seeds if preferred.
  • Coconut milk - I love combining coconut milk with pineapple as it gives a delicious tropical flavor, but you can use your milk of choice.  If you're looking for a substitute, I recommend oat milk since it's naturally creamy or dairy milk if you're not dairy free or vegan.

Variations

Here are some suggestions for different ways you can customize this recipe:

  • Add a handful of baby spinach or kale
  • Add a scoop of protein powder
  • Add ¼ cup coconut flakes
  • Add a scoop of collagen powder
  • Add a tablespoon of chia seeds
  • Add a tablespoon of hemp seeds or hemp hearts
  • Add ¼ cup of almonds or cashews
  • Add ½ cup of plain greek yogurt (or vanilla greek yogurt for a sweeter flavor).
  • Reduce the milk to ½ cup and make it a smoothie bowl.  Top with nuts, granola or fresh fruit.

How to make a Blueberry Pineapple Smoothie

This creamy smoothie only takes about 5 minutes to prepare.  So you can quickly whip it up on a busy morning!

Ingredients for a blueberry pineapple smoothie inside a blender.

STEP 1: Place all the ingredients for the smoothie into a high-speed blender and blend until smooth. Add a little extra milk if a thinner consistency is desired.

STEP 2: Pour the smoothie into serving glasses and optionally top with fresh blueberries and coconut flakes. Enjoy immediately.

Storage

Smoothies are best enjoyed immediately after blending. But you can also store them in an airtight jar in the refrigerator for 1 - 2 days. I like to use a Mason jar with lid for storing leftovers.  The smoothie might separate slightly while stored - but just give it a quick stir before enjoying it!

You can also freeze your leftover smoothie.  Just place it in an airtight freezer safe jar making sure to leave headroom for expansion.  Freeze for up to 3 months.  Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before serving.

Expert Tips

  • Use frozen fruit: This is key to giving your smoothie that delicious creamy, thick texture that you want. Using frozen bananas will instantly up your smoothie game.
  • Use good quality fruit: This smoothie is all about delicious fruit so be sure to use the best quality fruit you can for the best flavor.
  • Add extra milk if needed: If your blender gets stuck or your smoothie seems too thick, simply add an extra splash of any preferred milk to get the perfect smoothie consistency.
  • Multiply the recipe: If you want to make more of the smoothie mixture, you can double or triple this recipe, just keep the ratio of ingredients the same.
